The Unit Trust Corporation is now an event partner of The Beacon Trinidad and Tobago Cycling Festival 2010 to the tune of TT$75,000.00. This was announced on Wednesday March 31 2010, at the UTCs Head Office on Independence Square in a presentation to event organisers Phillips Promotions Co Ltd. (PPCL). Mr. Marlon Holder Executive Director of the UTC was on hand to make the presentation to Michael Phillips, Managing Director of PPCL and Richard Dickie, PPCL Retail Manager. Holder also took the time to view one of the new high tech Carbon Fiber wheels similar to what the top competitors will be using. Phillips, who is the creator of the event which is now in its tenth year was also a UTCsponsored athlete between 1996-2000 when he was a national team athlete. It is a really great feeling to have an ongoing relationship with the UTC whose existence is based on bringing prosperity to the citizens of Trinidad and Tobago Phillips stated.

The cycling event will commence on the April 15 and will feature some of the biggest track cycling stars in the world competing at five venues in Trinidad and Tobago. The UTC will be title sponsor of two of the events - the curtain event of each night at the track. The events, which will be known as the UTC Survivor Challenge, will comprise a 30 lap and 40 lap endurance event and will feature the largest field in the All Star category. The addition of the Survivor Prize aims to engage the spectators that much more, as opposed to waiting for one outcome at the end of the race. How will this happen? Within the course of the race a bell would be rung to signal that the first rider to cross the line in the following lap will win a prize. This will happen several times during the race and would motivate the cyclist to sprint or try to break away for the main field to win as many prizes as possible. The Survivor prize is contested in the first or second lap and is the biggest prize of all. There is a catch however. The cyclist that crosses the line first for the Survivor Prize must go on to finish the race no less than 15 seconds behind the overall winner of the race otherwise the overallwinner will get both the first place prize and the survivor prize.
