The athletic mecca of the south came into being in the 1930's as a result of a gift of fifteen acres of land from the Usine Ste Madeline Sugar Company. It was formerly called "Usine Park" but later renamed "skinner Park" after Mr. Glibert Chancery Skinner, the manger of the company who made the offer of the land to the Borough Council. The park as a sporting venue was given to the people of San Fernando for recreational purposes such as football, cricket and other athletic events and training. It is also important to Carnival, where historically bands are judged and has been the site of the semi-finals of the calypso monarch celebrations.
