Good news for Mountain BikersThe Beacon has been well known for its unprecedented support of cycling in Trinidad and Tobago for the past fifteen years, now the insurance leader will bring light to another discipline of the sport, MTB. There has been many valiant effort s over years to get the sport recognition and also to have a MTB stars arise as a result. However, the sport always seems to hit an insurmountable rut that prevents it from moving to the next level despite all of the effort. The greatest accomplishment coming out of all of the hard work has been the number of people that have taken up the sport at the enthusiasts and wellness levels.
A lot of credit has to be given to Trailing Edge, Rainbow Warriors as well individuals like John Mckell for all of the work that they have done in the Chaguaramas area which is arguably the preferred location for accessible mountain biking. Another group by the name of Trail Blazers also warrants recognition for their contributions to MTB in other parts of the country. Their work can be considered as a main motivating factor for people getting out and experiencing nature on a bike as well as increasing bike sales, employment in the bicycle industry and the quality of life. The big gap to be crossed is one of support for those efforts and the establishing of consistent high profile events that would finally give talented MTB riders the kind of recognition that would take them to the level of eventually qualifying for major international events. We at Mike’s Bikes have always seen ourselves as having to do our part in developing all aspects of the sport and we are pleased to have partnered with The Beacon in Guiding cycling to greater prominence and now we are putting that same effort towards MTB. The Beacon has committed to sponsor four (4) MTB events that will include the first ever National Championships. Some of the goals of The Beacon MTB series will be to help build and maintain trails in the Chaguaramas area and to bring the sport into a higher level of recognition that would then bring us to the stage of hosting our first international competitions by 2012. The events are carded to start in August and continue through to November with the National Championships. This is also an opportunity to have all MTB riders to come under the umbrella of the Trinidad and Tobago Cycling Federation (TTCF) where the member of the fraternity can officially lobby for more development of the sport. We will be posting more information in regards to dates, prize structures and courses. Send us your comment s and suggestions.
