Cycle Smart
is designed to develop in children the basic ability to use
a bicycle with confidence and competence for pleasure,
utility and/or sport under various roadway, climate, terrain
and traffic conditions. |

Their highest priority in this
programme is to instil in children the importance of
proper helmet use, the necessity of bicycle safety
checks and understanding of the “rules of the road”.
Also, the programme, once diligently followed, will
produce a higher level of fitness among children. As
a spin off from this project, The Beacon Insurance
Company and Mike’s Bikes intend to offer ongoing
community-based supervised activities through the
Cycle Smart Program. |

The first Beacon Cycle Smart
programme for 2008 was held on January 12th
at the King George V Park and was a huge
success with over one hundred and fifty
children in attendance.
Boys and girls from all around the country
came out in their numbers, armed with bikes
and accompanied by parents for a day of
fantastic family fun!
With obstacles ranging from
barrels, ramps and see-saws to fluorescent
cones and police with stop and no-entry
signs, the kids were able to learn important
road safety rules in a fun and safe
environment. They were taught the importance
of obeying the road signs while learning how
to manoeuvre the various obstacles.
They also had loads of fun
during the police siren demonstrations.
